Support Scouting

Friends of Scouting

Financial resources for the local council (the local nonprofit corporation chartered by the National Council) come from an annual Friends of Scouting campaign, local United Ways, foundation grants, special events, project sales, investment income, trust funds, bequests, and gifts of real and personal property.

These funds provide for professional staff supervision, organization of new Scouting units, service for existing units, training of volunteer leaders, and maintenance of council camps. They also finance the operation of the local council service center, where volunteer leaders can obtain literature, insignia, advancement badges, and other items vital to the program. In addition, the service center maintains advancement and membership records.

Endowment/Foundation

When people think about Scouting, chances are they think about kids, not dollars. But the fact is that much of the success the Boy Scouts of America achieved in serving youth in 1999 can be attributed directly to our success in endowment development.

For a council, a healthy endowment is critical for providing a steady source of funding for a variety of purposes, including day-to-day operating expenses, hiring additional staff, and financing improvements to camp facilities. Endowment can also serve as a rainy-day fund to help the council weather tough economic times without having to cut back on services to youth.

Thanks to the campaign, endowment growth has been fostered through the James E. West Fellowship, The 1910 Society, and the Founders Circle Award, which provide recognition for those who make significant contributions. Legal counsel has been hired in each region to assist local councils with endowment issues, while events such as national endowment teleconferences and other programs have helped educate potential donors and generated interest in endowment giving. One way many councils do this is through the National Endowment Art Tour.

Fundraising

Our council conducts an annual sale of a product by youth members. Although this sale is popcorn and popcorn related products.  The Yucca Council shares the proceeds from this sale (in nearly equal shares) with the units (Cub packs, Scout troops, and Venturer crews) that participate in the sale. Units’ proceeds are used as described above to fund unit programs and individual youth member activities. The Yucca Council's proceeds contribute to the council's operating funds as described above.

The national organization oversees the product sale and assures that vendors are qualified; however, the national organization does not receive any portion of the proceeds of the sale, nor does it receive any remuneration from the product vendors.
